About Me
The idea of starting a business popped into my mind when I was 5
years old. Well, at that age I never thought I would own a carpet
cleaning business.
When I was 5 years old I received a brochure in the mail that
offered an opportunity to sell Christmas cards. My father thought
this was a great idea, so he asked if I wanted to see how many boxes
I could sell? I thought it sounded like a great idea. Some of his
words of wisdom he shared, which have served me well, was to never
give up and to know that when I ran into problems that I had the
ability to figure them out. I walked door to door and sold 25 boxes
of Christmas cards. From that day forward I wanted my own business.
Throughout high school, I worked for my father building houses. This
was a great experience where I gained a strong work ethic, which
comes in handy now.
While in college I learned about carpet cleaning from a friend. I
often thought about starting a carpet cleaning business over a
period of about 15 years. One day everything came together at the
right moment and I stared putting the pieces together to begin the
business.
I clearly remember the day I finally bought my new carpet cleaning
equipment. My father and I drove to Seattle where we picked up my
new Rotovac and portable carpet cleaning machine. It was exciting! I
remember looking in the back of the car and thinking, “Wow, there is
everything I need to start my own business”. I was now going to be
self-employed.
I Did Things A Little Different, or So I Was Told
Before purchasing equipment I studied to become a certified carpet
cleaning technician. I was told by other carpet cleaners that was
the backwards way to do things and that most carpet cleaners only
become certified after cleaning for several years. I went ahead with
my plans, because I knew many customers were not receiving the
service they deserved. So I found an older version of the carpet
cleaning technician certification manual and studied it morning,
noon, and night for 3 weeks straight before the class. Needless to
say I passed the class with flying colors.
Why Start With a Portable?
For years the only way I wanted to start cleaning carpet was with a
truck mounted cleaning system, which is what I have now. I wanted to
make sure I could provide the best service possible. When I learned
about the Rotovac cleaning system I was convinced that I could clean
as well or better than a truck mount. I knew that is was the person
running the equipment that made a large difference in the results
they could provide.
When I bought my new equipment I upgraded everything! I bought
the largest air mover to speed up carpet drying times, the best
upholstery cleaning tool so I could control over wetting, a water
claw to properly fix pet urine problems, a black light, and other
tools. Then almost immediately I began to add more and more
specialized top of the line carpet cleaning tools. I constantly
added to my service and continued to study how to provide better
results. Well, it turned out that I could provide cleaning results
with a portable that many carpet cleaners with truck mounts couldn’t
touch.
After about 6 months I upgraded to a truck mount cleaning system
that utilized the Rotovac 360 Rotary Jet Extraction machine.
For those first 6-months I was always told I was slow only cleaning
200-400 square feet of carpet per hour, since most cleaners clean
800-1000 square feet of carpet per hour. I never could figure out
how they did that. Then one day I became friends with a great guy
named Emilio Martinez from
Fibercare-elp in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He told me that my
cleaning times were perfect when following when cleaning carpet the
way carpet manufacturers and the IICRC recommended.
Overtime, I added more services to my business, including putting
tarps on floors, corner guards for walls, providing client folders,
monthly newsletters, monthly contests, cleaning the edges of the
walls, specialized chemistry, and more.
It has been an exciting experience and a great opportunity to meet
some very nice people who provided great feedback and referrals. I
hope to add you to my list of excellent clients.
Sincerely,
Sean Mecham
